ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROJECT

P1B
DESIGN STRATEGIES AND EXPLORATION
In this stage, I built on the findings and proposal from Project 1a, focusing on individually exploring and developing my design ideas based on the 3P’s—People, Place, and Project. My goal was to test different possibilities while considering functionality, effectiveness, spatial quality, and form.

What I did:
-
Refined my design strategy and position by researching relevant precedents to strengthen the project’s architectural intent.
-
Planned the site and spaces efficiently within the 1,800–2,000 m² requirement, ensuring the spatial experience aligned with my concept and narrative.
-
Explored form and massing strategies, looking at building core placement, service areas, and safety requirements to optimize space planning.
-
Investigated materials and structural concepts that supported my theme, such as sustainable systems and construction methods.

The process was documented through sketches, study models, diagrams, conceptual/schematic drawings, and 3D representations, culminating in a final pin-up presentation that showcased my full exploration and final scheme.
Reflection:

This stage was both challenging and rewarding as I transitioned from the group proposal in Project 1a to developing my own individual design.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was working with a larger building form compared to my previous projects. The increase in scale meant that I had to think more deeply about spatial organization, efficiency, and circulation, as even small adjustments could have a big impact on the overall floor area and flow. Balancing functionality with spatial quality required a lot of iteration, and it pushed me to be more strategic with my design decisions.

Despite the difficulties, this stage helped me refine my problem-solving skills and gain confidence in handling larger, more complex projects. By the end, I felt a stronger sense of ownership over my design, and the process gave me a clearer understanding of how to translate conceptual ideas into a more resolved architectural proposal.
