PHASE 2.2

FINAL DESIGN

This phase is where we further develop our strategies and come up with a finalized design based on our analysis, concept, urban theory, planning and a set of requirements.

The learning center will be a hub for learning, cultural exchange, and social gatherings within a minimum floor area of 1200 m² and a maximum of 1300 m², spanning 3 to 5 stories.

The Learning Centre will include spaces like studios, exhibition areas, a mini-library, gathering zones, a cafeteria, and a souvenir shop. Services and circulation areas will account for 30% of the total built-up area. Outdoor public areas and plazas will enhance the public realm and community engagement.

Design considerations include:

  • Form, Space, and Façade Development: Focus on outdoor space, edge animation, building scale, and public connectivity.

  • Tropical Design Integration: Implement passive cooling, shading, and other climate-responsive elements.

  • Accessibility and Fire Safety: Ensure OKU (persons with disabilities) access, escape routes, and fire compliance.

  • Urban Context and Heritage: Retain and adapt the historic town's character in the façade design.

Further developing from Phase 2.1, I improved on my concept to become a Chinese Teahouse called the Tea Experience at Kampung Attap.

Based on the genius loci of Chinese associations in Kampung Attap and the Chinese heritage, I came up with the idea that the history of Chinese tea arriving to Malaysia is like a metaphor for the Southern Chinese migrants journey to Kuala Lumpur. Like the migrants themselves, traditional Chinese tea was brought over and they tried to preserve their traditions and culture while at the same time assimilating to the local life here. Eventually, they settled and spread their roots here, set up associations, clan gatherings etc. Similar to how the tea they had brought over eventually adapted to local tastes and ended up becoming a staple in Malaysians’ lives. With social bonding, maintaining sense of community and preserving traditions and identity being one of the migrants’ biggest relations to tea, the concept was to emulate this social gathering and bonding while revitalizing the history and presence of Chinese culture in Kampung Attap.

The Tea Experience at Kampung Attap will 1. strengthen and highlight the image and identity of Kampung Attap’s Chinese heritage. It will also be a public place where people can 2. learn about the history of Kampung Attap - more specifically about the history of Chinese association and Southern Chinese migrants of Kampung Attap through the history and art of tea to reinforce this identity. The Tea Experience at Kampung Attap is about 3. giving back public spaces to the public catering to the general public and especially the locals there as target audiences. This involves creating a place where they both can gather and have social interactions including facilities that they can visit anytime of the day. In the end it will also be a 4. memorable place that stands out physically and also in people’s minds.

I also based the design based on the urban theory of placemaking.

I explored the form of the building through mass modeling as well. And ended with a final model.

And then, I arrived at my final design and these are the presentation boards:
