ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 5

PHASE 1
TOWNSCAPE APPRAISAL & URBAN INTERVENTION
This project is focused on evaluating the Merdeka 118 Precinct in Kuala Lumpur to identify its character, identity, and potential for responsive architecture and place-making. Through a Townscape Appraisal, we assessed the urban area's visual, aesthetic, and contextual qualities to enhance its spatial and social attributes.
This study was the first phase of designing a Learning Centre for the local community. For this first phase of the project, the objective was to propose an urban architectural intervention that responds to community needs, retains the historic town's character, and improves public spaces.
Site Context:
Site A: Along Jalan Petaling, adjacent to Bulatan Merdeka.
Site B: Along Jalan Kampung Attap, near Bulatan Merdeka.
Personally, my group and I were tasked to Site B.
Nine core indicators guided our appraisal:
-
Historical and Urban Morphology: Studying the evolution and structure of the town.
-
Urban Structure: Analyzing connections, patterns, and spatial hierarchy.
-
Responsive Environment: Identifying design features that adapt to user needs and context.
-
Physical Evaluation: Assessing the built and unbuilt environments.
-
Place: Understanding the site's cultural, historical, and social significance.
-
Content: Evaluating architectural and urban design elements.
-
Landscape Character: Examining the relationship between natural and built environments.
-
Behavioral Survey: Observing user interactions and movement patterns.
-
S.W.O.T Analysis: Identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
Conducting the site visit along with teammates and fellow peers:

Following the site visit, data was compiled then analyzed through a series of SWOTs and eventually we came up the final site analysis as well as the final urban intervention along Kampung Attap's main streets.
