ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 1
ASSIGNMENT 3
SPACE AND SENSORY
Task:
To re-interpret the form and principles of the structure from Project 2.
Then develop a narrative to create a journey through 2-3 sensorial spaces.
To use only 2-3 materials.
Finally, we had to compose 4 A1-sized presentation boards including orthographic drawings, exploded axonometric, joinery details, abstract drawing and 4 tattoo stamps.
To begin, I reflected on my team's Project 2 function - safekeeping and its design principle of repetition. The entire narrative I wanted to push was to safekeep childhood memories as throughout the bamboo project, the cutting and tying of bamboo reminded me so much of adventure shows like Survivor that were reminiscent of my childhood dreams of one day experiencing that. So I started sketching some ideas and included some keywords to help with my design. I also built 2 sketch models.

Then I landed on my final design that I built within 20m^3 and at 1:10 scale. The materials I have chosen are steel and concrete. Expanded steel is reminiscent of childhood playgrounds while raw concrete can replicate the the dull interiors of a cave.
The journey starts from a cave where you have to crawl towards the light, climbing and scaling the cave walls till you reach the resting platform where you decide to continue the upward journey of scaling the tallest mountain - hence giving the name Ascension.
After completing the model, I began with composing the presentation boards including the drawings that were required. These are the four A1 presentation boards.
The last step was pinning up the presentation boards and having an external crit. And then I was finally done!
