ASSIGNMENT 2

DESIGN ESQUISSE - LEARNING POD

Project 1B was an esquisse focused on understanding materiality and environmental poetics in relation to context. In our assigned tutorial groups, we broke into smaller groups (3-4 students) to design Learning Pods to foster and nurture the learning environment within the redesigned and repurposed USJ14 community park. In a space of 3m x 6m x 3m (height), we proposed spaces and structures for learning purposes. Each tutorial group (10-12 students) completed three Learning Pods with different themes - Learning through Plants, Learning through People, and Learning through Play. The pods were also each to be primarily constructed using one of the three structural systems: Frame, Solid, or Shell.  Our team chose the Learning through Plants theme constructed using frame and designed a Learning Pod that included an edible garden. Our designs considered the needs of the site’s users, addressing questions such as what constitutes a good learning space, the essence of learning, and how architecture can create a conducive learning environment.
