Task:

  • Design a Discovery Center for Kampung Morten, Malacca emphasizing culture, heritage, history, and community well-being.

  • Two-story monolithic building, 350-450sqm, with 30% minimum on the top floor.

  • Universal design principles applied with the implementation of at least two modifying elements.

  • Translate the essence of Kampung Morten into a guiding narrative for the Discovery Center.

  • Spaces to include are Entrance, Foyer, Gallery, Contemplation Space, Briefing Area, Mini Café, Souvenir Booth, Toilets, Office, Storage, Utilities, Parking, Landscaping

  • Site Information, Location Plan

  • Roof and Floor Plans, Sections, Elevations and Sectional Perspective

  • Structural Concept Diagrams, Photomontage, 3D Images, and Passive Design Strategies Diagrams

  • A physical model

With the theme "Living Heritage" in mind, I first had to come up with a narrative and intention - a journey back to the good old days of Kampung Morten. The discovery center would be in 3 stages, showcasing cultures from the past, modernization and present eras of Kampung Morten. To start off, I did some site response diagrams along with some design process.

Including workshops to show structure and green strategies
