ARCHITECTURAL STUDIO 2
ASSIGNMENT 3
THE TROPICAL SANCTUARY
Task:
-
Design a Tropical Sanctuary at Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam (TBNSA).
-
Space requirements include contemplating area/s, working area/s, discussion space, resting area, and a washroom - all within a maximum built-up space of 100sqm.
-
Accommodate 2 people (student and another user) comfortably for a short stay of 2-3 days.
-
Ensure the design corresponds to the tropical site context, creating a unique architecture that integrates with the landscape and activities.
-
Demonstrate design intentions through the application of architectural principles, materiality, and constructability.
Firstly, we made a site visit to Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam, Selangor.
Then within sub-groups, we made site-response vignettes, focusing on two different specific microsites within the entire garden.
Following the site-response vignettes, we then individually focused on one of the two microsites, coming up with site alternatives, producing two models as well.
And then I came up with my last massing model.
Followed by my mockup model for interim.
The concept I was going for was to have a retreat with open view on all sides of the building with the use of vertical timber louvres as my design language. My companion for the retreat is my sister.
And finally, I finished the final model.
Presentation boards.
Me, on presentation day with my boards and model.
Reflection
Throughout the assignment, I integrated the needs of diverse users, including my sister, while designing for the tropical climate and site context of Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam (TBNSA). Considering factors such as privacy, accessibility, and shared activities, I aimed to create an inclusive and thoughtful design. Designing with users in mind emphasized the importance of tailoring spaces to meet specific needs and fostering a sense of belonging. Incorporating these considerations broadened my understanding of designing for different individuals, highlighting the transformative power of architecture. Simultaneously, I embraced the tropical climate and site context by optimizing natural ventilation, lighting, and incorporating sustainable features. This assignment deepened my appreciation for the interconnectedness of user-centric design, tropical climate response, and site context. It reinforced the role of architecture in shaping experiences, creating comfortable spaces, and respecting the environment.
