ASSIGNMENT 2

CONTEMPLATIVE PAVILLION

Task:

  • Interpret and explore architectural principles from previous Project 1 in the context of a tropical rainforest setting.

  • Create an architectural platform with a maximum volume of 125 m3, focusing on spatial experience.

  • Prepare a minimum of four and maximum of eight A3 landscape format presentation materials including key and orthographic drawings.

  • Include a short write-up on findings about the selected hypothetical Tropical Rainforest setting.

  • Come up with a series of diagrams to convey the principal ideas of the design scheme and include a spatial experience narrative.

Based on a ying-yang narrative, we came up with the following design - with a play of light to darkness and balance between natural and manmade. Our pavilion is supposed to be situated on a cliff facing the ocean.

Then, we came up with the drawings and composed the presentation board.

Reflection

This assignment was exciting and challenging for me. I enjoyed exploring architectural principles in a tropical rainforest setting and expressing my ideas through diagrams, drawings, and models. The limit of 125 m3 for the volume pushed me to think carefully about the spatial experience. Working with a group of three students allowed us to share ideas and work together. I improved my skills in creating clear and simple diagrams and drawings to communicate my designs. I also learned more about materials and structures by focusing on detailed drawings of timber joints. Overall, this assignment was a valuable learning experience. It helped me understand how architectural principles and spatial thinking relate to real-world design. I also developed better visual communication skills.
